FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE

After gathering a complete history and physical examination, I combine my knowledge of physical medicine, Chinese medicine and nutrition to formulate a complete plan to optimally restore function, reduce inflammation, reverse autoimmunity and reduce pain. Laboratory information can be ordered to determine if supplements, botanicals or medications are needed. Additional support can be provided with acupuncture, qi gong or other modalities.

The power of food has not yet been embraced. I am a medical doctor and certified nutritional coach and encourage my clients to adopt a new relationship with food. I follow the Hippocratic principle of allowing food to be our medicine and medicine be our food. Food is fundamental to our health and well-being. I personally have experienced a miraculous transformation using food as have my patients. My practice consists of patients with autoimmune disorders, inflammatory disease, intestinal issues and pain.

Discovering the foods that work best for us is a large part of regaining and maintaining our health. As a nutritional health coach as well as someone who has healed from autoimmune issues and chronic pain, I guide patients in discovering their best nutritional plan.
MOVEMENT
As a board certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist, I guide my patients to a movement
therapy or practice that is right for their condition. I teach Qi Gong and incorporate Pilates, Yoga and
resistance training in my exercise instruction.

PAIN
Pain is a signal from our body telling us something is wrong.  It means stop and pay attention.  As we slow down, our awareness expands.  We become more conscious of our bodies and the things in our environment or in ourselves that increase or decrease pain.
Inflammation is a cause of pain and the standard american diet is an inflammatory diet.  Our first focus is to change the diet to non- inflammatory foods.  Through an elimination diet, our relationship to food changes and our awareness of our body changes.  As our bodies heal, our mind heals and that is when the spirit can live and breath.
Persistent pain slows healing. I am a diplomat of the American board of medical acupuncture and offer individual treatments for alleviating pain and achieving wellness.
I also offer ACMOS treatments which is an energetic treatment of the whole person.

ABOUT CINDY SMITH MD
